Virtual Course: ARS 2nd-Level Course for Sop/Tenor

Tone and Phrasing - Sop/Ten Recorder: The recorder gets a bad reputation for sounding shrill and squeaky! But the soprano and tenor recorders are capable of being beautiful solo instruments as well as ensemble companions. Join professional performer/teacher Jennifer Carpenter for this class focused on sound/tone production and expressive phrasing, all while continuing to better understand the fundamentals of recorder technique. Conquer your fears and learn how expressive the recorder can be!

Attendees are expected to be able to play low c to high G (octave and a 5th including F#s and Bbs) and read those notes and general rhythmic patterns on the music staff. All music will be provided. You don’t need to be confident, just familiar with these skills - we’ll work on improving them further. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Course Dates: Mondays and Thursdays Jul 20, 23, 27, 30 at 8 PM, ET

NAVRS: ARS Sensuum

The five basic human senses - sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste - allow us to perceive our surroundings in wondrous ways. Music has repeatedly illustrated how our artform can visually and aurally awaken some senses and touch on those that it may not use directly. In honor of NAVRS’ 5th year, we will explore five pieces of music representing each of the basic human senses that span the centuries. Experience how inspiring music may bring a new energy and life to the art of the senses.

Amherst Early Music Online: The Temperamental Musician

Musicians are rarely accused of being single minded! We are often asked to create differing yet compelling imagery or affects through music. Rooted in ancient Greek philosophy the four temperaments - sanguine, melancholic, choleric, and phlegmatic - are associated with a distinct set of characteristics that we still recognize as a mixture of our own personality traits.
